Monthly Recap | June

We are now almost a week into July (HOW?!) so it is time to look back over the last month and have a look back at June.

I have been so lucky to have had three shoots out this month! I love the outcome of all of them and they have been featured on some great blogs. I have also got some stunning photos for my website from them and worked with the most talented of suppliers. I am so looking forward to having even more out in the next couple of months to share with you all. I have blogged about each of the shoots which you can read and see here.

June was also the month that I worked on two gorgeous weddings and did wonderful mirrors for them! These were the first mirrors that I have worked on although they took a bit of working out they went really well and I loved the outcome of them. I am still waiting on the professional photos from them but for now here are my snaps (taken in my hallway aka the only place in the house where I didn't get a reflection of baby toys!) For one of these weddings I also got to do the most gorgeous leaf place settings...which I absolutely loved.

Finally to sum this up I worked on my first PR event this month with the lovely Alice Gabb. We did a launch party for Totem Adornments with Push PR writing little love notes for guests. It was so lovely to hear what wonderful things people had to say about their loved ones and in the gorgeous setting of The Swan Pub at The Globe.

Such a great month! To see snaps of what I get up to day to day follow me over on my social media channels through the icons below!

Introductions | Oh Wonder Calligraphy

Hello! I thought it was about time for some introductions and a little history around here.

I am Lauren the designer and calligrapher behind Oh Wonder. In 2010 I graduated with degree in Fashion Journalism. After working in fashion for a couple of years I got the itch to do more designing, as this had been my favourite part of my degree, so in 2012 I went to Shillington College to study Graphic Design. I absolutely loved every minute of my course so when I graduated I started to freelance particularly in branding and magazine/print design. I have always been slightly obsessed with stationery and so at the end of 2013 after doing a couple of wedding suites for friends I spent a lot of time researching (aka on pinterest) stationery, in particular wedding stationery, when I came across a lot of modern calligraphy and fell totally in love with the beauty and romance of it.

The rest as they say is history. I spent hours upon hours trying out different nibs and holders and paper trying to learn how to change my very average handwriting into beautiful calligraphy. I took a Skillshare class taught by Molly Jacques which finally showed me the correct tools to be using, Nikko G nib, Speedball holder, Layout paper and Higgins Eternal Ink, which are all great for beginners and still my go-tos, as well as a general alphabet to be working with. Another great tool I had was the book Modern Calligraphy by Molly Suber Thorpe which was and still is indispensable.

At first a lot of what I was doing with Calligraphy was making cards for friends and family and pages on pages of favourite quotes and song lyrics and gradually I got better and better. In 2014 I fell pregnant and during my pregnancy I worked on a few weddings creating invitations, save the dates, envelopes and table settings. After having my son in April 2015 and enjoying being a full time mum and just doing calligraphy in the few quiet moments I had I decided that this was 100% what I wanted to do and after months of planning Oh Wonder Calligraphy and Stationery was born in January 2016. Since starting it has been a bit of a whirlwind and I have been lucky enough to work for some amazing private and corporate clients along with many talented people in the wedding industry on some stunning shoots. I have lots planned for the upcoming months and am so excited of what else this year will bring!

So that is me and Oh Wonder in a nutshell. This blog will be updated weekly with inspiration, calligraphy tips, sneak peeks and insights into shoots that I have worked on. Enjoy!

ON SITE CALLIGRAPHY | LONDON ZOO

Back in January I was very excited to be invited to London Zoo for the day to do some calligraphy on invitations to the opening of the new Lions enclosure which took place on March 17th. The gorgeous invitations were printed on thick GF Smith Colorplan stock and I used Higgins Eternal Ink with a Nikko G nib to write the invitees names in calligraphy with a bit of a modern twist. As a huuuuge fan of the Zoo this was such an exciting day-especially as I got to walk past the Giraffes on my way in and wrote an invitation to Sir David Attenborough one of my heroes.
